Tanning: Depression & Psoriasis

We all know the adverse effects caused by prolonged time under the sun or in a tanning bed. It may come as a surprise to you, but there are also a few good things that "sun worshiping" can do for you. In moderation, of course!

During winter months especially, the lack of sunlight can cause the type of depression known as seasonal affective disorder, or SAD. You can improve your mood by hopping in a tanning bed for a few minutes. Though, it will not treat your depression completely, it will certainly offer you a placebo effect, giving you a little boost mentally & physically!

Some suffer from Psoriasis, a skin condition caused by the immune system attacking the skin cells and causing them to turn over faster than normal.

In people without psoriasis, skin cell turnover takes a few weeks. In people with psoriasis, this process happens over the course of a few days. This rapid turnover causes patches of raised, red skin to appear.

Though, scientific evidence is unclear, some research shows that indoor light therapy can help reduce psoriasis symptoms and flare-ups.

Our indoor tanning beds offer a combination of UVA and UVB light therapy. The reason for this is that UVA rays are associated with appearing more tan; however, UVB rays also are responsible for bringing melanin to the surface, which can make a person appear more tan. UVB rays are ideal for psoriasis treatment -- in moderation, of course! The UVB rays slow down the production of T-cells and therefore reducing flare-ups. Since there are many different kinds of psoriasis, you should talk with your Doctor about the best treatment options for you.
